FEATURED DESTINATION / 01
Glacier National Park looks deceptively simple on a map. In reality, Lake McDonald, Logan Pass, Many Glacier and St. Mary are spread across very different parts of the park, and where you sleep can determine whether you spend your vacation hiking or driving. Our route gradually moves from the west side toward Many Glacier and the east side instead of returning to the same hotel every night.

FEATURED GUIDE
A day-by-day route that makes room for the drive, the weather, and the moments worth lingering for.
05 DAYS
•
ROAD TRIP + HIKING
WEST SIDE — Lake McDonald • Apgar • Going-to-the-Sun Road
HIGH COUNTRY — Logan Pass • Highline Trail
EAST SIDE — Many Glacier • Grinnell Glacier • Iceberg Lake • St. Mary
Five days is our preferred first-trip itinerary because it provides enough time for the park’s major hiking areas without making every day feel rushed. But you can still experience Glacier with two, three or four days if you prioritize carefully.
2 DAYS — A QUICK TASTE OF GLACIER
Day 1: Lake McDonald + Going-to-the-Sun Road. Day 2: choose one major experience—Logan Pass / Highline or Many Glacier. Two days is a preview, not a complete Glacier trip.
3 DAYS — THE ESSENTIAL HIGHLIGHTS
Lake McDonald + Going-to-the-Sun Road, Highline / Logan Pass, then Many Glacier with Grinnell Glacier or Iceberg Lake. Three days gives active travelers the iconic road plus two major park experiences.
4 DAYS — THE HIKING-FOCUSED VERSION
Lake McDonald + easy hiking; Going-to-the-Sun Road + Highline; Many Glacier + Grinnell Glacier; then Iceberg Lake + St. Mary. You lose the flexible final day for wildlife and weather buffers.
5 DAYS — THE COMPLETE ROUTE WE RECOMMEND

WEST SIDE — NIGHTS 1–2
Lake McDonald, Apgar, and West Glacier work well for the western approach to Going-to-the-Sun Road. Established options include Lake McDonald Lodge, Village Inn, Apgar Village Lodge, and Motel Lake McDonald; availability and prices vary.
Check stays near West Glacier
EAST / MANY GLACIER — NIGHTS 3–4
Many Glacier, Babb, and St. Mary reduce driving for Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake. Many Glacier Hotel is the classic in-park option when available; Babb and St. Mary can provide alternatives nearby.
Check stays near Many Glacier / St. Mary
West Glacier to Many Glacier can take roughly 2½–3 hours, while St. Mary to Many Glacier is only around 30–40 minutes. Changing bases can save substantial driving.
VEHICLE RESERVATIONS
Vehicle reservations are not required anywhere in Glacier National Park in 2026.
GOING-TO-THE-SUN ROAD
Going-to-the-Sun Road is approximately 50 miles and takes roughly two hours end to end without meaningful sightseeing stops.
LOGAN PASS ACCESS
From July 1 through September 7, private vehicle parking at Logan Pass is limited to three hours; longer Highline routes need a ticketed Logan Pass shuttle plan. Shuttle tickets are tied to specific dates, boarding locations and departure times.
VERIFY BEFORE YOU GO
Always check current NPS road, trail, shuttle, weather and fire information before traveling.
